The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District posted the 2025 Recreation Plan for the Francis E. Walter Dam. The plan specifies dates and actions associated with whitewater and fishing releases from the dam from late March to early October of 2025. USACE coordinates the plan with the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

• 2025 Francis E. Walter Lehigh River Dam Release Whitewater Dam Release Dates (24+2**) are listed below. All dates during the recreation season are subject to change according to weather, safety and/or Army Corp. of Engineers decisions in relation to flood control and water storage expectations/needs.
• Whitewater Releases Schedule (dates with * are dependent on adequate water storage):
  • May: 10, 17, 24, 25
  • June: 7, 8, 21, 22
  • July: 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27 – (PEAK Pricing)
  • August: 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23*, 24*, 30*, 31* – (PEAK Pricing)
  • **October: 11, 12 as provided by end of year releases – (Fall Foliage Pricing)

(**The Oct. 11-12 weekend release is TBD and is intended to provide a means of releasing any excess water that may have accumulated during the recreation season. These MEGA-Releases in the past have been approximately 2000 CFS on Saturday and 1200 CFS on Sunday, and are super fun!

• 2025 Flow Management Plan – Whitewater Dam Release Schedule

In 2025, the plan includes 24 whitewater releases and 22 fishing enhancement releases (unchanged from prior years). The 2025 recreation plan has one minor change from the prior year. In the event of excess storage above elevation 1355 and after all other increments have been funded, any additional storage will be utilized for fisheries augmentation releases from Saturday, September 27 through the start of the mega release ramping on Thursday, October 9.

 

Please note at the conclusion of the ongoing feasibility study, we will host a public meeting for additional comment. The plan will remain in effect until that time.

The Lehigh Gorge Bike Trail is the most spectacular rail trail system in the world during the colorful fall season. The Pocono Mountains have over 127 deciduous tree varieties changing color for your viewing pleasure. This is the current Fall Foliage conditions according to the Pocono Mountains Visitor’s Bureau which we are a proud member of since 2015. The pictures below are from the Northeast US Fall Foliage Report according to the Fall Foliage Network in which we are proudly a leaf spotter for!

Week of: October 31 to November 6, 2016

Northern: The northernmost color zone encompasses northern Wayne and Pike Counties. Cold weather and rain have brought down most of the leaves in the region. Full color is at 100% with 10% of the leaves on the trees. This region is past peak color.

Central: The central color zone encompasses southern Wayne, Pike and northern Monroe Counties. All of the region has gone through significant changes this past week. Some areas are still showing a broad array of colors. Many of the trees lost their leaves last weekend from the strong winds and rain. Some of the Oaks are still hanging onto their green leaves further to the south, but will change very soon. A good place to view the foliage, this week is on Kunkletown Road from Saylorsburg to Little Gap. Full color is at 95-100% with 40-60% of the leaves on the trees. This region is past peak color. This area would comprise our Fall Foliage Season Bike Tours.

Southern: The southern color zone encompasses southern Monroe County and Carbon County. Heavy rain and strong winds brought down some of the early fall colors, but the Oaks will continue to show color. As the early players in the fall color fall to the ground look for the color of many Oak trees to be the major component on the mountainside. There are many different colors displayed by these trees such as orange, red, yellow, and even when the bright color goes away, they will hold on showing a russet brown for several weeks. Look for Chestnut Oak and Red Oak on the ridge tops to show the best colors. There will also be some pockets protected from the wind, which will hold on to the early colors as well. Get out and explore the county to find some of these hidden gems. If you get out early enough, you can get some pictures with the heavy forest on the ground. Full color is at 70% with 50% of the leaves on the trees. This region is not past peak color and our Fall Foliage Season Bike Tours would include this area.

White Haven, Poconos, PA October 3, 2022 – Welcome fellow leaf peepers to our favorite time of the year, the autumnal equinox! This formal beginning of Fall in 2021 was on September 22 at 3:21 p.m. We are so excited to report that from the reaches of the northern Poconos to our area here in the epicenter of the Poconos, White Haven, PA we are seeing lots of color emerging. The Poconos fall foliage splendor and all it’s glory is getting an early start due to having consistently cold evening temperatures since early September. This year the oaks will usually be their brilliant selves but the sugar maples are being affected in some ways by this early start.

Have you made the trip to see fall color in Pennsylvania yet? The golds, oranges and reds are making their way through the state, and it’s spectacular. These cooler temperatures we have had lately and shorter days, signal deciduous trees to stop producing chlorophyll, the green pigment responsible for photosynthesis, it breaks down and exposes other brilliant leaf pigments. They create the yellows and oranges seen in the leaves of yellow poplar, hickory, sycamore, honey locust, birch, beech and certain maples. Trees also produce pigments in their leaves called anthocyanin, which creates the brilliant reds and purples seen in maple, sassafras, sumac, black-gum and scarlet oak.

We’re already a week into the season, but there are still many ways to experience Pennsylvania’s fall to the fullest. Pennsylvania’s varied topography from sea level to over 2,000 feet on the Pocono Plateau, supports 134 varieties of trees that change color. Add in shrubs and vines that also contribute their color palettes, you get to be a part one of the top 3 places in the world to witness the awesome display of autumn color.

Fall Foliage Forecast Pocono Mountains Pennsylvania

Northern Poconos: (northern Wayne and Pike Counties) We took a ride through this area last week and there is lots of change in color but it’s muted. This is due to the summer drought we have had. 90% of the leaves are still on the trees but high winds and colder nights can bring some downfall so check the weather forecast this region could turn quickly.

The Fall Foliage peak color in the Northern Poconos Region will be around the weekend of October 8.

Central Poconos: (southern Wayne, Pike and northern Monroe Counties) If you go for a mountain bike ride like we did this past weekend you will see a lot of color change and 95% of the trees still have leaves on them which makes for an amazing spectacle of light. Some species like Sassafras have exhibited colors of red, yellow, orange and Black Gum are showing shades of red. The Red Maples are varied in color depending on their altitude and nearby water. The Hickory and Ash are briefly displaying some yellowing but quickly become a dull brown. 

The Fall Foliage peak color in the Central Poconos Region will be around the weekend of October 15.

Southern Poconos: (southern Monroe and Carbon County) Very little color change if any at all has been witnessed in the forest from our southern Poconos leaf spotter, but be on the lookout for bright yellows of Black Walnut and Goldenrod around farmlands. Black Gum and Sassafras are showing some color. Black Gum will display a deep red and orange while Sassafras will show orange and yellow colors. 99% of the leaves are still on the trees. 

The Fall Foliage peak color in the Southern Poconos Region will be around the weekend of October 22.

Hickory Run State Park is a 15,990-acre Pennsylvania state park in White Haven, PA. The park is spread across the Pocono Mountains.
