By the last weeks of September, color have ramped up significantly across the Poconos. We will be seeing 15–30% color in northern and central zones, with southern areas beginning to show more consistent change.

DCNR’s statewide reports for this period typically place Northeast PA in the “approaching best color” category, and 2026 is tracking right in line with that pattern.

Regional Color Snapshot

• Northern Poconos: 25–35% color, strong yellows and early reds
• Central Poconos / Lehigh Gorge: 20–30% color, patchy but noticeable
• Southern Poconos / Jim Thorpe: 10–20% color, mostly green with emerging pockets

Tree Species Behavior

• Birch: Strong, bright yellows along ridges and roadsides
• Red Maple: Deepening reds in swamps and stream corridors
• Hickory: Gold tones spreading across mid‑slopes
• Oak: Still mostly green—setting up a solid mid‑October peak

🍁 Mid‑September 2026 – Early Season Fall Foliage Report

Date: September 08, 2026, Location: White Haven, PA – Lehigh Gorge / Poconos Region

The 2026 fall foliage season is officially underway in Northeast PA and the Poconos. As of mid‑September, we’re seeing 5–10% early color in higher elevations and wetland corridors, with most of the region still predominantly green.

A warm, stormy summer followed by slightly cooler nights has set us up for strong leaf health and good moisture, which typically leads to bright, saturated color later in the season.

Current Color Status

• Northern Poconos (Wayne/Pike): <10% color, 95% leaves still on trees
• Central Poconos (Monroe / upper Carbon): <10% color, mostly green
• Southern Poconos (Jim Thorpe / Lehighton): <5% color, 99% leaves on trees

Early changers:

• Red maple in wet areas
• Black birch on ridges
• Blueberry and understory shrubs
• Young hickory and witch hazel

Best Mid‑September Spots

• Lehigh Gorge Trail near White Haven

September 03, 2026, By: Tom Williams, Fall Foliage Leaf Spotter – Poconos Outdoors Reporting from White Haven, PA — the heart of the Poconos Outdoor Adventure Scene

The 2026 fall foliage season is officially underway in the Poconos, and early color is already popping across the Northern Poconos Region. Thanks to a warm, storm‑rich summer followed by a cooler temperatures at night especially at higher altitudes, the second half of September will be here in no time, but we are already seeing strong leaf development, healthy canopies, and excellent early‑season vibrancy.

This year’s progression is running about 5 days earlier than 2025, with meaningful color shifts already visible in higher elevations and wetland corridors.

🍂 Current Color Status – Week of September 3, 2026

• Early Color (5–10%) in the upper Lehigh Gorge
• Patchy Color (10–20%) near White Haven, Glen Summit, and Hickory Run
• Near‑Green (0–5%) in lower elevations toward Jim Thorpe

Earliest color is coming from: black birch, red maple, swamp maple, witch hazel, blueberry, and young hickory. Oaks remain deep green — a great sign for a strong October finish.

🌄 Regional Breakdown

Black Diamond / Glen Summit

Early pops of yellow and orange along ridge lines. Birch and young maple are leading the charge. Expect 15–25% color by the end of next week (Sept 10–Sept 17).

White Haven / Hickory Run

Wetlands and stream corridors showing the best early color. Boardwalk areas near Sand Spring Lake will be glowing with golds and light oranges.

Rockport

Mostly green with scattered early color. This section typically lags 5–7 days, and 2026 is following that pattern and then some with the later Labor Day Weekend Date Change affecting timing of weekend foliage ranges this is why we are doing the forecast midweek.

Jim Thorpe

Still predominantly green, but mountain laurel understory is beginning to shift. Expect noticeable color by Late September early October (Oct 3–5).

• Birch: Strong yellows already showing in high mountain environments
• Red Maple: Early reds in wet areas
• Hickory: Gold tones emerging
• Blueberry: Deep reds in understory
• Oak: Healthy, green, and holding — excellent for early October peak

🏞 A Regional Monument, The Francis E. Walter Dam

How a flood‑control project became the beating heart of Poconos outdoor adventure.

The Francis E. Walter Dam stands today as one of the most important landmarks in the Poconos — not just for its engineering significance, but for the massive impact it has had on recreation, conservation, and the outdoor economy of the Lehigh River Gorge. What began as a federal flood‑control project in the mid‑20th century has evolved into a regional monument that shapes everything from whitewater rafting to wildlife habitat to the modern outdoor tourism boom.

🌊 Born from Floods: Why the Dam Was Built

Before the dam existed, the Lehigh River was notorious for catastrophic flooding. Ice dams would form during winter, then break apart during heavy rain, releasing destructive waves up to 30 feet high that wiped out infrastructure, homes, and entire riverfront communities. The most infamous flood occurred in 1861, destroying dams, locks, and settlements far beyond the riverbanks.

After devastating floods in 1942 and 1955, federal action became unavoidable. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers condemned the land — originally owned by the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company — and began construction on what was then called Bear Creek Dam.

The dam was completed in 1961, and even during construction it prevented multiple flood events downstream.

🏛 Renamed for a Pennsylvania Leader

In 1963, following the death of longtime U.S. Representative Francis E. Walter, the dam was renamed in his honor. Walter served Pennsylvania’s 15th Congressional District for over 30 years and was instrumental in supporting regional infrastructure and flood‑control initiatives.

🛠 Engineering the Lehigh River’s Guardian

The Francis E. Walter Dam is an earth‑fill embankment stretching 3,000 feet along the crest and rising 234 feet above the streambed. It controls a 288‑square‑mile drainage area, providing 35.8 billion gallons of flood‑control storage.

Key engineering features include:

• Concrete spillway
• Gate‑controlled outlet works
• A 1,150‑foot discharge tunnel
• Seasonal water‑storage zones for recreation and conservation

This system works in tandem with Beltzville Dam to protect downstream communities like Allentown and Bethlehem.
